Melissa, a multidisciplinary artist from Tijuana, Mexico, has taken a unique approach to her art by combining her artistic production with traditional artisanal techniques. Her project aims to establish relationships that expand and activate creative fields and work methods based on tradition, local knowledge, and the intersection of personal and collaborative work.

In pursuing her passion for art, Melissa has recognized the importance of preserving traditional
craftsmanship and creating opportunities for artisans using fair and horizontal manufacturing practices. She has taken a hands-on approach to this goal by creating unique handmade pieces alongside artisans who specialize in different ancestral processes. This approach not only helps preserve these traditional techniques but also creates opportunities for income and employment for the native communities of Mexico.

Melissa's project is not only focused on preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship but also aims to share and strengthen local practices and knowledge. She is interested in capacitating new artisans and providing them with opportunities to learn and grow. Through this project, Melissa hopes to create a bridge to the native communities of Mexico and help them sustain their traditions while building a better future for themselves.

INTERVIEWER

How do you find fulfillment ?

MELISSA AVILA

Accepting myself and being gentle with myself; embracing my strengths, my own processes and my dark areas... Honouring my creative spirit because it is not always possible and not easy either. And the truth is, also when I see my daughter smiling.

INTERVIEWER

Choose one: time travel or eternal youth. Why ?

MELISSA AVILA

Time travel! Time travel! Because we are the result of our history, because I am very curious, I would like to visit places and to know other people, witness a little of how we are here. I'm also happier since I got grey hair.

INTERVIEWER

How does singing make you feel ?

MELISSA AVILA

WONDERFULLY. I can't really think of another word. Singing is something that has always accompanied me, that I have always enjoyed and made me live life better. However, I feel that over time I have been fortunate to discover it more and more... Singing is healing and has the power to transform... In my experience it was through indigenous medicine and motherhood when I understood how powerful and important it is.
